The original Mobile Suit Gundam series aired in Japan in 1979, focusing on the war between the Principality of Zeon and the Earth Federation. It spawned the Gundam franchise, which features giant robots, or mecha known as 'Mobile Suits'. The series is widely regarded for pioneering the "real robot" genre, telling diverse stories focused on war and political drama rather than magic or superhero tropes that were otherwise typical in anime at the time.
Sydney Sweeney's Gundam film does not have a release date at this time.
